EARLY TWENTIES

I'm on the far left. This is a newspaper photograph commemorating my first place win out of over six thousand entries in the John A. Rycenga award for writing. To my right is Charlene Dougiello, who placed second, Dr. William Conley, President of the University, and Jack Kardos, who placed third. I no longer have the actual piece that won me the award. It floated away long ago. My memory is that it was typical college writing. Clever, but nothing more. I hadn't learned yet that writing about the world means writing about yourself.
