EARLY FORTIES

On the construction site for our home in Texas. We'd drive out there every Sunday afternoon, when the crew was usually gone, and just wander around the wooden skeleton of what would become our home. After so many years of living in apartments, where you have to worry about what's on the other side of the wall, I can't tell you how excited we were at the thought of having our own piece of property in this world. There were trees in our backyard. For the first time in our lives, we actually owned trees. Not just potted plants, or a potato vine wandering away from a jar filled with water, but actual trees. Tall trees.
