LATE THIRTIES

By the tiles on the fireplace behind me I recognize that this was the apartment we lived in when we moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1988, after wandering around America and Canada for several months, living in motels, having a great time, looking for a new place to settle down. We only stayed a few months (we couldn't find jobs, everyone told us to move to Dallas, which we eventually did), but the time we did stay there has a special place in my memory. We'd go out each day before it got too hot, buying the ingredients for the meal we'd prepare that evening, rent a video, then come home, pour a drink, slide open the drapes on our balcony, and watch the big Texas sky descend to darkness while we talked and listened to the local rock and roll stations. We'd eat about ten o'clock, and watch the video sometime after midnight.
